Status of the SPEAR
On Friday, July 9, 2010,
the USS L. Y. SPEAR was awarded to
Esco
Marine, Inc. Ship Recycling Facility. We anticipate the
SPEAR's movement from Norfolk Naval Shipyard to Brownsville, Texas, to
take place in the next couple of weeks, and will post updates here as
they become available.
July 16, 2010: The SPEAR's
status on the Naval Vessel Register (NVR)
remains "Stricken, to be disposed of"; however, the Planned
Disposition now reads "TO BE SCRAPPED". Also noticed on the
NVR is the removal of her custodian.
August 5, 2010: The
status
on the Naval Vessel Register (NVR) is changed from "Stricken, to be
disposed of" to "Stricken, to be disposed of by dismantling".
August 6, 2010: The ship is
scheduled to be towed sometime after August 20th.
August 20, 2010: The SPEAR
will depart Norfolk Naval Shipyard at 11:00 a.m. for Brownsville, TX.
September 3, 2010: The SPEAR
arrives at ESCO in Brownsville.
May 2011: The SPEAR has been
completely dismantled. |
